That was AWESOME!!!!

Wow.  It’s been 6 months since I have last posted.  Depending on your viewpoint:  sorry or you’re welcome.

Today has been quite a day.  Parker had his first work-out with his new soccer club, KC Milan, gymnastics practice, a pizza party with the gymnastics team, and Carmen had swim lessons.  All of that?  That’s normal stuff for us.  Nope, what made it quite a day was being able to attend the open training that Manchester United held at the Kansas City Wizards’ training facility in Swope Park.  I guess I have been fairly vocal in my support for Manchester United, so when a father of one of Parker’s former teammates received extra passes to this, he thought of us and offered them.

So…why was it AWESOME? Read the rest of this entry »

Personal Review of The Watchmen

I went and viewed The Watchmen with my wife, her father, and her two brothers today.

Let me start off by saying that I enjoyed it.  I have never read the graphic novel.  I know about most of the main cadre of superheroes that we all know from both Marvel and D.C. comics, but not much about this book.  I had heard of The Watchmen, but have never taken the time to read it.  In other words, I am solely reviewing the movie itself and not its faithfulness to the original source material.

In spite of a suggestion to do otherwise, I did not take my son to see the “comic book” movie.  I had already read enough about it to know it was going to be violently and sexually graphic.  Oh boy, was it. (/gleefulness)  I discuss this first because it is the most obvious part of the movie.  While most of it could be construed as gratuitous, they did add to the story.  There were times that those in my group and theater covered our eyes during certain extremely violent scenes.  I did notice that no one closed their eyes during the graphic sex scenes.

I was glad my son wasn’t there.

As for the movie itself, it was enjoyable.  It was good enough that I refused to get up and pee for the entire duration of the film.  I shouldn’t have had that large Diet Coke.

I know everyone comes up with a different interpretation of films, music, and other types of art.  I could discuss how ignoble or how altruistic and devoted to the truth humanity can be.  Even how both can subsist in the same person or people.  I won’t.  I see too much of it on television in the news.  I go to movies now for pure escapism.  Escape I did.

It was a good story with plenty of action, both violent and otherwise, to hold my attention and leave me sated at the end.  I enjoyed the ending and the seemingly…nevermind.  I better not give that away.

Go and see it if you are not squeamish or easily offended.  Don’t take your kids.

Or mine.

The End of Break

After decimating the health of our family in Iowa with a four-year-old girl, it is time to go back to school.

What got accomplished?

  • Living room, dining room, and kitchen were painted by Lani and her mother
  • My laptop was beginning to crash, so it was reformatted to Ubuntu, thus requring me to take the plunge I have been trying to merely wade into.
  • Kids have recovered from a bout with something flu-like (probably the flu, I guess)
  • Most stuff has been put back into the painted rooms
  • Christmas tree and lights have been put up.  Decorations will need to be done over the next copule of days

I will still need to change all of the outlets and switches to white instead of what looks to be beige.

Just saw the weather!  Woo-hoo!  55-degrees means I may be able to get the front yard mowed and the leaves mulched since I am not supposed to rake because of the new grass.

Well, the kids are better, Lani & I have not gotten sick, and it is time to go back.  Time for bed.

Sickies and blog update

Well, Carmen is definitely better.  Unfortunately, she passed it off to Parker and her Aunt Kara.

Parker was up for awhile last night purging himself of anything resembling nourishment.  I noticed he had the corn at lunch like I did.  Kara apparently bad enough to cancel the Jazzercise class she teaches this morning.

Lani, my parents, and myself have not felt anything.  *knock on wood*

I think I may have settled on a theme for this site.  There isn’t a lot of razzle-dazzle, but seems to do everything I want it to.  Who knows?  We’ll see if I stick with it.

New Blog and Website!!!

Yep.  I’ve changed things up again.  I have decided to go with WordPress for this site and am currently considering Joomla for the band site.

Now pardon me while I figure all of this out over Thanksgiving weekend.
